A Portuguese tax identification number (NIF) is used for contracts, employment and many everyday activities. Having a NIF does not, by itself, make you a Portuguese tax resident.
Request a NIF
Read the Tax Authority's instructions before booking an appointment or applying through a representative. Prepare valid identification and proof of your address abroad; check which additional documents apply to you. Your NIF remains the same if your tax status changes.
After your residence changes
When you meet the tax residence criteria, check how to update your address and status with the Tax Authority. The authority states a 60-day reporting period; confirm how it applies to your circumstances. Keep evidence of your address and submission.
Keep three moments separate
Needing a NIF: identify the transaction that requires it, such as employment, renting or buying. Accessing the Tax Portal: check how to receive and keep your credentials. Becoming tax resident: assess the legal criteria and update your record when they are met. These events need not happen on the same day.
If you use a representative, check the powers and documents required before paying for a service. After applying, verify your name, address and status in the Tax Authority record. Your registered address should reflect your actual circumstances; keep proof of any change to clarify dates later.
When setting your budget and choosing an area, allow for tax costs and individual advice if you have income, property or pensions in more than one country.
A practical order
First check your residence route, obtain a NIF when needed, and review your tax record when your actual residence changes. If you have income or assets in more than one country, seek individual tax advice before assuming how you will be taxed. Return to the Algarve moving plan.
