Moving to Portugal: which residence route applies to you?

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens

Check entry and residence rules with AIMA and Your Europe. For a longer stay, check the registration procedure with the municipality where you will live. A non-EU family member may need a separate procedure.

Non-EU citizens

Start with the purpose of the move — work, study, family or another situation — and confirm the appropriate visa and documents with the responsible Portuguese consulate and AIMA. Buying a property does not, by itself, establish a right of residence.

Prepare a decision for each person

Make a record for every family member: nationality, travel document, purpose of stay, planned arrival, expected duration and relevant family relationship. Entry conditions and conditions for a longer stay are separate questions. Where dual nationality or non-EU family members are involved, check which document and procedure will be used.

For EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, identify the municipality where you expect to live and check the registration procedure that applies. For non-EU citizens, establish the visa category and responsible consulate first; then check AIMA's residence permit stage and evidence requirements. Check passport validity, translations and family documents before booking travel.

What to settle before choosing a home

Find out whether your route depends on work, study, resources or family reunification, and the actual deadline for documents. Ask whether your temporary accommodation meets the relevant procedure rather than assuming any booking will do. Record the official sources consulted and their dates because procedures can change.

Once the route is clear, set a total budget and compare Algarve areas. Property ownership is a separate decision from residence permission.

Before committing to costs
