Check the requirements for your move
The process depends on your nationality and reason for moving.
There is no universal checklist. Before booking removals or committing to a purchase, confirm the entry and residence route that applies to you with official sources.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
Freedom of movement makes entry simpler, but a longer stay may require residence registration and other formalities in Portugal.
- For up to three months, carry a valid identity card or passport.
- For a stay over three months, check the applicable conditions and request a registration certificate from the local council within the period indicated by AIMA.
- The evidence required may differ if you work, study or support yourself.
Non-EU citizens
Visas, residence permits and supporting documents depend on the purpose of the move, family circumstances and country of origin.
- First identify your reason for staying: work, study, family or another route provided by law.
- Check the visa, documents and responsible Portuguese consulate before travelling; for residence, then check the permit stage with AIMA.
- A short-stay visa or buying a home does not replace a residence permit.
Mixed-nationality families: a non-EU family member of an EU citizen may have a separate residence-card route. Check entry, proof of family relationship and the application with AIMA rather than assuming the general visa route applies.
